What is the Menopause?
The word menopause comes from Greek:
- Meno means ‘month’
- Pausis means ‘to stop’
This is an accurate description as the menopause is the time of life when the monthly menstrual cycle stops. This usually occurs between the ages of 45-55.
What causes Menopause?
Women are born with a finite number of eggs cells in their ovaries. When these egg cells run out, hormone levels start to drop, which can trigger the symptoms which are associated with the menopause.
Common Symptoms of the Menopause:
- Hot Flushes
- Night Sweats
- Vaginal Dryness
- Discomfort during Intercourse
- Difficulty Sleeping
- Low Mood and/or Anxiety
- Reduced Libido
- ‘Brain Fog’
- Memory or Concentration Issues.
Is the Menopause All Bad?
Menopause has a bad reputation, it is ‘the end of fertility’ or it causes ‘uncomfortable symptoms’. However, it is a completely natural phase of life, which means the end of the monthly cycle and for many the end of PMS. There are also some women who sail through this time with little or no difficulties. For these women there is no need to take anything to support them through the menopause.
