The Science Behind Green Tea – Jenny Logan DNMed

In my previous blogs, I have been looking at ways to help support people who are wanting to lose weight: including the 5:2 diet and the use of Glucomannen to help fill you up more and so eat less.

I am continuing this theme, having a look at the claims and the science behind two other weight loss products – Green Coffee and Green Tea. Starting with Green Tea.

WHAT IS GREEN TEA?

Green and Black Tea both originate from the same tea plant – Camellia Sinensis.  To produce black tea, the harvested leaves are allowed to oxidise – which causes the loss of many of the health-giving components of the plant. Green Tea, however, is not allowed to oxidise, thus allowing it to maintain high levels of the polyphenols which are credited for its health benefits.

 

GREEN TEA FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

Green tea may help you lose weight. Several studies have suggested that the flavonoids (NOT the caffeine!) in green tea can help improve the metabolic rate. One study showed that those who consumed green tea and caffeine lost an average of 2.9 pounds during a 12-week period, while sticking to their regular diet.

The beneficial effects of Green Tea could be gained from drinking the tea itself. However, many people (including me!) do not really like the flavour, plus, to get the amount of green tea suggested by some of the studies, you would need to be drinking around 6-7 cups a day. This would be rather a lot of caffeine!

On top of this, the most important substance within Green Tea has been identified as a flavonoid called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). In order to ensure that you are getting a good quantity of this flavonoid, without all the caffeine, it is probably easiest to look for a good Green Tea Supplement, with low caffeine levels and a guaranteed content of EGCG.

 

WHEN TO CHOOSE GREEN TEA

With so many weight loss supplements available it can be difficult to know which one to try. I always think of Green Tea as the one to try when you have been on a diet for a while and come to that ‘sticking point’, where the weight loss has really slowed down. Feedback from my clients has indicated that taking Green Tea at this time can help to get things back on track!
